Leadership and Governance
The University of Illinois System is overseen by a 13-member Board of Trustees and President Tim Killeen. Along with the chancellors of each of the universities and other U of I System executives, the board and president keep the U of I System and its universities competitive, growing, and fully committed to the core missions of education, research, public service, and economic development.
Board of Trustees
The University of Illinois Board of Trustees consists of 13 members, 11 who have official votes. Nine are appointed by the Governor for terms of six years, and three student trustees (one from each university: Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield) are elected by referenda on their campuses for one-year terms. One of these student trustees is appointed by the Governor to have an official vote. The Governor serves as an ex-officio member.
Governance
Within the limits fixed by the constitution of the State of Illinois, the University of Illinois Board of Trustees exercises final authority over the University of Illinois System. There are three documents that provide guidance to university and board policy and practice: Statutes, General Rules, and Bylaws.
President's Office
The president’s role is to set policy for system-wide endeavors and provide leadership at the state, national, and international levels for collective activities across the universities.
Organizational Charts
The U of I System Office for Planning and Budgeting comprehensively reviews and updates the organizational charts several times a year. Every effort is made to capture position or title changes on those dates.
University Senates Conference
The Senates Conference is a statutory body (Article II, Section 2 of the University of Illinois Statutes) providing the major link between the faculties of the Chicago, Urbana-Champaign, and Springfield campuses and is charged with reviewing “all matters acted upon by each Senate” and with determining “whether senate actions requiring implementation or further consideration” are being referred to appropriate officers.
